MEET THE GARDENING TEAM: Samuel Key, Carmen Pannan & Lee Harber

the gardening team of Yangaro

Can you tell us about the Gardening team's role in maintaining the stunning landscapes at Yangaro?
Our role as the Gardening Team at Yangaro is not just about maintaining the grounds, but also about enhancing the overall guest experience. Each day, we start at sunrise with the stunning backdrop of the ocean and mountains surrounding us. We believe that the elegance and luxury of Yangaro are deeply tied to the lush tropical gardens that frame the villas, so keeping them in pristine condition is essential to creating a memorable stay for every guest.

What are some of the team's favourite aspects of working together to keep the gardens beautiful for guests?
Fertilising the gardens and lawns is one of our favourite tasks, as it's key to keeping the property looking as spectacular as it does. While we enjoy working as a team when possible, with just three of us, we find that more can be accomplished when we each focus on different areas to cover the vast grounds efficiently.

How does the natural beauty of Funnel Bay influence the gardening choices and overall landscape design?
The natural beauty of Funnel Bay is the foundation of our landscape design. We’ve carefully selected neutral green foliage with minimal colour to create a calming atmosphere for guests. In recent projects, we’ve worked closely with Landcare to incorporate indigenous species and implement eco-friendly practices, reducing chemical use and minimising our impact on the local ecosystem.

What are some seasonal highlights or special plants that the team loves to showcase to guests throughout the year?
This time of year, we love seeing the resident bush stone-curlews raising their young in the gardens, a tradition that’s been ongoing for over six years. Another highlight is the unique blooms of the Etlingera elatior, which always capture attention. And, of course, Carmen’s coconut experience is a guest favourite—she harvests coconuts from the property, offering refreshing coconut water on hot days.

How does the Gardening team prepare the grounds for special events, like weddings or retreats, at Yangaro?
We start preparing months in advance to ensure the lawns and gardens are at their best for special events like weddings and retreats. The tropical climate in North Queensland can be challenging, so we adjust our schedules around seasonal weather events and always plan to have the property looking perfect for guest check-ins and activities. Timing our work to maintain a serene atmosphere without disrupting guests is an ongoing consideration.

In your opinion, what makes the gardens and outdoor spaces at Yangaro stand out compared to other Whitsundays venues?
The combination of location and landscape makes Yangaro truly unique. Nestled between two mountains with the ocean at our doorstep, the natural beauty here is unmatched, and our gardens are designed to enhance that sense of serenity and luxury.

What sustainable or eco-friendly practices does the team implement in maintaining the gardens and landscapes?
We’re very mindful of our location within the sensitive ecosystem of the Whitsundays and the Great Barrier Reef. To protect the environment, we minimise fertiliser runoff into waterways and use chemicals sparingly, carefully monitoring wind patterns to avoid overspray.

How does the team ensure the gardens remain an oasis throughout the year, especially during challenging weather conditions?
Maintaining a tropical oasis in this climate requires planning and experience. With over 50 years of combined local expertise, we’ve learned to be proactive, ensuring the gardens remain lush and vibrant year-round. Managing the fast growth of tropical plants and the removal of large amounts of green waste is one of our greatest challenges, but it’s all part of keeping the grounds at their best.

What hidden or lesser-known features of the gardens should guests be sure to explore during their stay?
We recommend a walk through the lower recreational area toward the beach. Just before reaching the sand, you’ll find a hidden path leading to the creek mouth, framed by mangroves—a peaceful spot showcasing the area’s natural beauty. Early morning walks around the property are also magical, with the first rays of sunlight hitting the dewy plants and turf.

What gardening tips or inspiration would the team like to share with guests looking to create a similar lush garden experience at home?
Our advice is to start with the basics—soil health is key. It’s like the foundation of your home. With good soil, proper watering, and a balanced fertiliser program, you’re well on your way to creating a lush garden. But remember, consistency is important—don’t neglect it!
