MEET THE MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT: Mark

Head of Maintenance - Mark (featured top left, second position)

Can you tell us about your role in maintaining the facilities and ensuring everything runs smoothly at Yangaro?
I’m responsible for keeping 11 houses and a shed in top shape, along with maintaining 15 pools and spas, a gymnasium, sauna, steam room, conference/yoga room, buggies, cars, and about 60 air conditioning units (not to mention all the bathrooms!). Our hot, humid, and salty environment can be challenging, so my motto is, “If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.”

What do you find most rewarding about keeping the property in top condition for guests?
After doing a full check to ensure everything is running smoothly, I love setting the ambiance for guests’ arrival with music, lighting, and other details. The best reward is a seamless stay, where guests don’t need to call on me for anything.

How do you prepare the villas and amenities for special events like weddings, retreats, or large group bookings?
For events, I’m the go-to helper—whether that’s moving, removing, or setting up items to make things easier for the coordinators and Leah. I make sure everything’s in place, so each event runs smoothly.

What are some behind-the-scenes maintenance tasks that help create a seamless experience for guests?
Before guests arrive, I double-check the Wi-Fi, audio systems, and iPads, as they can sometimes be temperamental. Ensuring everything is connected and working properly allows guests to settle in immediately without tech issues.

What sustainable or preventative maintenance practices do you follow to ensure the long-term upkeep of the property?
To protect the property in our intense summers, I keep the houses cool and dry by running the air conditioning for short intervals throughout the day. Since most houses have solar power, this helps maintain electronics sustainably and avoids costly breakdowns.
